They sent my husband a letter saying that he had won $95,000.00 in a lottery and mailed him a check for $2950.75 to cover the taxes. After we posted the taxes we were told that we had to come up with an additional $1K to cover shipment of the check. It's bogus!

- I am an attorney and have a client with the exact same fraud. The check uses a Canadian postal code and has two elements of fraud. One - demand for payment of taxes where normally all taxes are withheld, and Two - activation of the check, once written the bank will treat as valid and no company would write an activation check. Additional issues exist but I recommend that all such letters be reported to your local Post Master for further investigation.
