RCMP warn of possible Kijiji fraud

Residents reminded not to click on suspicious links


RCMP have received a complaint of a possible fraud being initiated through Kijiji.

In this case, a person had an item listed for sale and an offer was made to buy it. The offer came from out of the country and the buyer advised he would pay through PayPal.

The seller did not receive any payment, but did receive a message from PayPal stating he owed money and if he did not pay he would be charged. A link was provided to confirm this transaction.

When a situation or request seems suspicious, it is important to remember not to click on any links provided within an email. In this instance it was very easy to prove whether the email was fraudulent or not. The seller did not click on the link; instead he went directly to the PayPal website and checked his PayPal account to confirm that no money had been received and no repayment was required.
