I paid a deposit to "Thomas Banks" for a tour in South Sudan having got assurance from a website called Socially Responsible Safaris that they used Bahr El Jebel as their subcontractor. I joined a Juba, South Sudan, chat site for ex pats and asked some questions. I was told that Banks had never run a tour there. One of the people who warned me was a guide who said he had been set up to back tours but had not been paid for his pre-work (although he remained listed on the Bahr El Jebel site as the main guide). Banks says he has a policy of no refunds under any circumstances including when he says he can't do tours because of security concerns. It seems that he takes deposits (no refunds) right through to full payment (no refunds), says he can't do the tours because of security reasons, and then gives you a credit for a future tour. I have never been able to find any proof that he has run a tour even though I have asked for customer reviews (no customers?) or anything else. He has a Facebook page which superficially makes him look legit but looks like a lot of borrowed material to me. I can't be positive he's a scam guy but even if not his policy of no refunds under any circumstances is at best unethical.
