Young man came to door with confusing but plausible story about making money to get to an internship at a radio station in CA. Claimed to be a neighbor, claimed to be a student at a nearby University, told me the program he represented was designed to collect money to send books to a well-known children's hospital in my state. Very hyper, claimed to be nervous (inconsistent with his claim to be a mass comm major). I can't believe I fell for it, but I wrote him a check for $42, made out to World Wide Circulation. When I came to my senses I went looking around the neighborhood for him, didn't see him but did see a van picking someone up at the end of the block. I did some checking and everything he told me (possibly even his name) was a lie. The address he gave on the next block doesn't exist. The university as no record of him. They don't have a mass comm major. Judging from posts about this company, there are no books sent to children's hospitals. His pitch was almost identical to those described on a number of other websites. I stopped payment on the check, so I'm out a $33 fee, not the full $42, and at least WWW won't get my money. I filed a police report, but the only offense the police took seriously was a lack of a license -- they stopped the kids in another neighborhood. Teaching kids to lie effectively strikes me as child abuse, though most of the kids are technically adults, I guess. This is a nasty scam all around!
