My companion and I picked up our rental car at Lisbon's airport on July 26, 2011, presenting the Europcar's people at the reception counter with the prepaid voucher from the travel company with which we had booked our trip: EUROSUN HOLIDAYS of Toronto. I then got added as an additional driver my lady companion for which I was charged € 45.00. At the Check-Out Station I was given a Renault Clio and the service given by the lady assistant was very poor: no instructions on how to use the assorted buttons/levers in the dahboard; no manual in the glove compartment or label/decal in the dashboard stating the car was DIESEL-RUN, NOt gasoline. When the car needed refilling I did so using unleaded gasoline (at a cost of € 57.00) and, limping and dangerously stalling along the 120 km/hr A22 highway, we arrived at our hotel from where we phoned the Albufeira's Europcar's agency for a replacement. We were given a 3-cylinder WW Polo, whic had, in contrast with the Renault's car, a label posted on the fuel tampon clearly indicating it was Diesel-run.
Now, returning home, I received yesterday a CITI MasterCard statement charging me a total of Cdn $885.26 — $300.00 of which were designated as "Other Surcharges". The only money I owe Europcar is €45.00 for the additional driver charge.
I'm reporting this situation to CITI's MasterCard asking them to look at the ripoff Europcar is trying to impose on me and my travelling companion by using the credit car info I had left with them at the Lisbon's airport car rental counter.
