International boundaries

My husband – who is an infrequent internet user, undertook, as a favour, to apply online for an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), for a disabled friend who is REGISTERED BLIND.

It transpires this is a scam as an EHIC card is free, but because of the site's positioning at top of Google page following a search for EHIC, and the misleading application button on the top of the home page it fools the unwary into paying £14.99 for a free card.

Having subsequently seen the website, I have found the small print which says the card is available free from the NHS, so I guess they are legally within their rights, but it really is misleading for those who do not use websites very often as the EHIC application button is the obvious route they are steering people towards.

I am surprised Google allows such companies to pay for positioning on their pages.

Our friend cannot work because of his condition and therefore cannot afford much, he is now having to pay for something he is entitled to for free, because of the ambiguous wording on the website which is obviously specifcally constructed to achieve this result.

I searched high and low on the site to find an email address to contact them, but the only one I could find came back undeliverable when I emailed to ask them to refund the submitted fee to my husband, so that our friend can apply for the free EHIC card via the correct channels. There is an address in Belgium to write to but by that time the card will have been processed I imagine.

I would be grateful if you can help with this - It's not a great deal of money but it makes my blood boil that they are clearly fooling enough people into parting with £15 to make it worth their while.

Surely anyone who advertises should have a method of email contact at the very least if not a phone number?
