This whole thing started when I put an entry into a contest for a one year free membership at Gold's Gym. Shortly after that I recieved a phone call stating that I had won the free membership and that I needed to go into their office to sign some paperwork. When I looked at the contract it had numbers on it, and I asked the salesman what it meant and he said that it was what I would have paid if I didn't win the free membership, but I did win so I didn't have to worrie about it. I had never really dealt with a gym before so I didn't worrie about it until the following month when I recieved a bill form them. I called Gold's Gym to dispute the fact that I didn't owe them any money for I had won a one year free membership with them, the person on the phone informed me that I did not win it and that they had given it to a disabled person, I felt swindled. At this time in my life I was going through rehab where I had gotten off of heroin and onto methadone in 04/2006. I was not transistioning well and I was in the hospital many times a month for two years (which me signing the contract was during this time)I was incoherent and couldn't hold down a job. I did not make any payments for years because I never used the membership once. I had to start making payments with Gold Gym's collection agency in 2011 in order to move into an apartment. After I had made a few payments over the phone, I had asked for paper statements or a receipt of my payments. They never sent them to me so I stopped the payments. Now They are taking me to collections and sueing me for the amount of $2,328.85. I am fighting them because I do not believe thatI should have to pay them anything because their dealings with me were sneaky and I never used the membership once.
