My 19 year old sister was on Craig's List looking to purchase a vehicle. She spotted an advertisement from a Joshua Labbe who was selling a 2006 Nissan Maxima in great condition for $1800. When my sister asked why so cheap, Mr. Labbe explained to her that he was in the military and was located in Madrid, Spain. He said that because he was being deployed, he was required to "rapid-sell" his car.

He stated that he would take a down payment of $900.00 and the remainder of the amount could be paid in installments. Mr. Labbe said that for the security of his property and for the security of my sister's money, he would be using a service called the eBay Motor Protection Program. Once my sister sent the money, eBay would hold it until she received the vehicle at which time her 10-day trial period would begin. During this trial period, my sister would have the chance to inspect the condition of the car and decide whether she truly would like to keep it. If she was satfisfied enough to sign the title, she was to keep the car in exchange for eBay releasing her money to him.

My sister did send the first payment of $900 via money gram. Upon receipt, Mr. Labbe forwarded the car title via email to my sister, but told her that plans had changed and he would not be able to send the car to her until he received to full lump sum payment of the remaining $900. He gave my sister a week to send the rest of the payment, which she did send on 2/27. Since the receipt of the remaining money, Mr. Labbe has not responded to my sister's emails any further. On 3/8, my sister asked me to email Mr. Labbe acting as though I wished to pursue the purchase of this same vehicle. I have yet to receive a response, but on the same day, I Googled Mr. Labbe's email address and was redirected to this site where I found that this same email address and name were associated to a scam of the exact same sort.

We are currently trying to get to the bottom of this and we are hoping that my sister will in the end be able to recover her money. More to be posted as more is discovered...
