I booked 2 apartments in New York City listed on the Airbnb site and the booking was confirmed by the owner on an official looking Airbnb cover email. I was asked to make a bank transfer to an account at JP Morgan Chase Bank. Once the money was transferred I received a booking confirmation form detailing the owners full details, D.O.B. passport number, photo and NY address. A week later, I was asked to send the rest of the money via Western Union and he would send me the keys to the apartment - 6 months before I was due to be there. Warning bells rang as I had been warned not to send money via this method, but that bank transfer was safe. The moment I queried this, the emails stopped and, of course, I had been scammed. I rang Airbnb and was told that as I had "gone off-line" they were not responsible. I had no clue I was not dealing with a bonefide Airbnb client. It would appear they do not screen their "clients" and that their adverts for apartments can be hacked into and duplicated. I am now poorer but wiser and will not deal through Airbnb again.
