My monetary damages are actually hard to determine. I rented a car from Alamo in February and took the option to be able to bring the tank back empty because the agent said the cost of the gas would only be $3.33 per gallon when the going price of gas was about $3.76. When we returned the car; however, we had an additional charge of $106.67. Upon following up on this with Alamo, I was told that the cost of the gas was $49.90 and the taxes and surcharge totaled $56.77. I inquired about the size of the car's gas tank and was told it was 13.2 gallons. Given the amount charged ($49.90) and the size of the tank (13.2 gallons), it appears they actually charged us $3.78 per gallon!

HOW CAN THIS BE? How can they get away with this? I was told that they do post that additional taxes & surcharges would be added to the cost of the gas, perhaps it is posted somewhere, but they do not tell the consumer that the taxes & surcharges will cost more than the gas!

While it was our stupidity to fall for the agent's recommendation that we take the option, I think something has to be done to protect other consumers from this highway robbery. And why in heavens name should the taxes and surcharges be so heavy???

I should mention that because I went nuts, the phone rep did refund me $24.95.
