I have a HP color printer that I use on rare occasion. It works just great in fact I printed a great picture just the other day. Than I get this software update on the internet form HP, quite large and I figure they are just refining their code so I say go ahead and install it. Now the printer prints only solid black pages. I called customer help, India, "so sorry, out of warranty, do you want to pay?" The printer will print a test page just fine. I tried using several types of software to send it a picture from. They all print solid pages of black. The printer even tells me I only have enough black left to print 49 more pages like that. I uninstalled all the related software and reinstalled the original as I still have the disk. It now works thus proving it was their recent (Yesterday) download that screwed up the computer yet they want me to pay for them to fix it. So when your printer gets out of warranty, it appears HP downloads software that screws up your printer so you either pay them to fix it or buy a new one.
