I rented an apartment through an ad on craigslist. I contacte craigslist twice and have received no response. I have attached copy of my complaint below.

This is my second complaint about fraud, and I have received no response. There has apparently been a lot of fraud on craigslist, because when I called the FBI, the agent immediately asked if I found the ad on craigslist. I had agreed to rent an apartment, which was supposed to begin on September 19 and last two weeks. The day I arrived in New York, the owner told me she was leaving town and locking up the apartment. despite numerous communications, she never returned my $560 deposit. Her ad was now conveniently expired. The information I already provided includes:
Name of owner: Suzette Goolsby
Property address: 225, E 26th St, New York, NY 10016
E-mail: [email protected]
Telephone: 347-765-2708
Fax: 347-572-0477

  • Hi Andrew,
The very same thing happened to me on October 9, with the same address, same time and person named suzette goolsby. I'm going to report this to the police.
We are from Hungary, not familiar with NYPD report. Did you get any feedback after your report? Do you think we have any chance getting our money back? I'd be happy to hear from you, here or in e-mail [email protected]
    Regards, n.

  • Nora,
I was able to get a response from craigslist by clicking "law enforcement" in the comments section. I sent the same information that I posted, and they wrote back and told me to contact the FBI or police. They also sent a link for any law enforcement to click which had all of the information they had about Goolsby. I spoke to an FBI agent, and he said to call New York State Trade Commission: 212-384-1000. Since Goolsby did this twice in just a few weeks, she probably did it before and will likely do it again. If you give me some way to contact you I will call the FBI back and give them both of our contact information. If a lot of people had the same problem, maybe they will do something about it. This must happen a lot on Craigslist. When I spoke to the agent the other day, the first thing he asked was "did you find this on Craigslist?" I know I will never use craigslist again.

  • Hi guys
Ok, same thing happened to me. She ripped me off 440 dollars. She offered to pay me back but she didnt. I reorted that to the FBI. I feel so bad...We need to stop this. I have one question. When you called her? Did she talk to you on the phone? How did you make the payment?
    Thank you

  • I tried to call a number of times, and it always goes to some kind of answering service. The service sounds legitimate. Live people pick up, give an ID number and say they are trying to find her. They then take a message verbally and say they are sending her the message. The phone number is 347-765-2708. She used to respond to e-mails but doesn't any more. Now there are at least three people who have reported the same scam by her. I don't know how many other people she has scammed. Do you think if we give them a list of people she has scammed the FBI or someone will do something about it? Maybe we should all put our experiences together in a list with all of the information they might do something about it. When I e-mailed craigslist they sent a link with the info they had. Maybe if you report it also, we can give the information to law enforcement.

  • Ok, I called to that phone number and the exactly same thing happened to me. That stuck me as odd. We could do that, I called the FBI yersterday but they said I have to go to the nearest police stationt and file a report. I think we need to work toghether to stop this. It is amazing the coldness with which she tries to be nice to yo and offers to pay you the money back, what she is obviously not going to do.

  • I was vacationing in New York, but didn't think to report it to the NYPD until I had already left town. The officer said I should go to the apartment, and call 911 from their to report "theft of services" The FBI agent asked me if I knew anyone in New York who might be able to help me. She e-mailed me a contract with her bank account information, but my evidence showing she picked up the money is not in pdf format, so I don't know if it can be used. Maybe the bank would send something in an acceptable format to be used as evidence. Maybe if we somehow report it as a group the FBI would do something about it. If they take it seriously enough, I'm sure they would know how to put the pieces together.

  • She offered to pay me back the money but she obviously didnt. I am going to the police station tomorrow and I will file a report, using the bank transfer, the contract and all the emails as evidence. I was wondering if the bank has some kind of insurance that would cover for tis lost. What do you think? Maybe we should put all the reports together and try to stop this.

  • Hi,
I'm still here just had no computer for a few days...
By now I'm back in Europe, but I have filed a report on the police still in NYC.
I'm going to call the detective on Wednesday afternoon, to find out how it proceeds. I'll let you know the result of my call.
I will also ask if they aready know about your cases too, as I understood all reports concerning this case should end up on the same police station no matter where you reported the fraud (because we all got the same apartment address).
