I was approached by a young man late in the evening (around 6:00PM) on my college campus (Southeastern Louisiana University) in Hammond, Louisiana. The guy said that his name was Jabriel Scott (pronounced like Gabriel but with a J), and that he was a student who was studying to become a special ed teacher. He at first acted as if he wanted to get to know me a little bit by asking me if I wouldn't mind being asked a few questions. He asked me what my interests and hobbies were; I didn't really think anything of it because I was in the student union and there are always people there asking questions like that. He then said that he was trying to get a scholarship for $1000 and asked me if I would't mind helping him get some points to help him win the scholarship. He showed me a list of magazines and based on what I told him my interests and hobbies were he put three of the magazine titles down on a sales sheet and asked if I'd buy the subscriptions. He also told me about several other people that he had sold subscriptions to, I guess to make me trust him. The dude was a real scam artist because he then walked me to an ATM in the union and told me to withdraw $148. I felt somewhat nervous because there was no one else around, and I was alone with this guy. The ATM dispensed $150 and charged me an ATM fee of $3 and then my bank charged me an additional $2 non-chase ATM fee. So now I'm out $155. This guy knew exactly what he was doing because he could see that I was a young student in a hurry that didn't know about these types of scams and knew that I'd do anything to get him to leave me alone. I wasn't the only student who they scammed either. Yes " they , " there were at least 2 other young men walking around the student union, one even got a kid in a wheelchair! All these guys were between the ages of 18-24 and were all African American. After the whole thing, I realized how stupid I was and noticed that you could cancel the transaction. I sent in a copy of my sales record to the address like it says to on the sales record, but doubt that I'll ever see a penny or any of the magazines because of what others have written on this site as well as other sites.
