I am looking for a place to stay in New York City. In an accomodation group on facebook a girl said she would rent out her room. I sent her a private message and she forwarded me the email address of her landlord. I chatted over skype with him and he sent me a contract and a copy of 'his' ID. I was starting to doubt the whole thing when he asked me to transfer 1,000 Dollar for the deposit. Only afterwards he would send me the keys to the apartment. I thought it's weird that I have to pay before I even have seen the place and know if the keys match to the door. So I started searching in the internet and came across several advertisements for rooms and apartments in different cities with the same email address but different names.and then I found the complaint here on scambook, which probably saved me from sending him 1,000 Dollar.
