Received an absurd phone call from a man claiming to represent Windows. He repeatedly called me "Mrs. James" (spouse's first name) and he insisted that my Windows account had registered a hidden error on the Windows server and he wanted me to go online so he could fix it. I was more concerned with how he'd obtained my contact info and why he'd used so odd a permutation of my name. I never mentioned my surname specifically, but he then spoke my husband's surname. He also tried to tell me that anyone who buys a computer with Windows has provided their contact info. Interestingly, I do have a new laptop with all new Windows OS & software which I just registered days ago. I did not provide my phone number, nor my spouse's name, and I never identify myself as "Mrs." anything. The man had an Indian-sounding accent, so I could overlook the cultural bias mistaking my title or surname, but so many inconsistencies plus his repeated insistence that I go online so he could fix something that he was unwilling or unable to describe in any more detail than a "Windows error showing up on the server" leaves no doubt this was an attempt to do something fraudulent. Beware!

Update: 01/14/2014

Update: A woman called later the same day and s/w my husband, trying to get him to allow her into his computer because of "error messages on the server coming from his computer". Geez!
