123reg.com is a one-man operation, run by a guy called Phil Endean, and a reseller of domains. They are not ICANN certified.

Not to be confused with 123-reg.co.uk.

After paying for renewals for multiple domains and hosting, they failed to renew it, and it all went south from there. This story is not unique, we've heard it from others, although too late.

My domains expired. Then, my domains went into the final stage of redemption.

During this fiasco, I had been promised that it was an oversight, a problem with their system, and that he was in the hospital. Nothing but excuses.

In the meantime, my time to file for a refund with PayPal had expired.

They were unreachable. Did not respond by email or phone. Their support ticket system is just as useless.

They stole my money, and refused to issue a refund. Maybe I should have acted faster when I no longer heard anything from them, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Finally, after checking their registrar how to resolve this, we were put in touch with the company they buy from. They immediately took charge and although we had to pay again for the domains, we were able to get them back.

I am still considering if it's worth a trip to small claims court. I have all the emails to prove their lameness.
