My stepfather, 86 years old and suffering from Alzheimer/dementia, continually (daily)receives mail from several entities (including but not limited to: Addleshaw, Bird & Mitchell/American Fiduciary Disbursements/Greenfield Monetary Fund/National Asset Allocation/Registered Disbursement Division from several different locations around the country)stating that he is the confirmed winner of anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. The bottom line is that all he has to do is send a check for a "PROCESSING FEE" made out to -initials only- NRC/ FR / UPC / WNP ,etc. in the amount of usually $20.00. Due to his medical condition, he believes that he will be the recipient of this 'prize' and will write a personal check to these initials only entities and mail them out. The checks are processed and the amount deducted from his bank account
each endorsed "For Deposit Only/
PacNet Services Ltd/FNBCT Waco, Waco, TX/ 11924680 / 866-689-0399."
This has gone on for months and all attempts to intercept the mailings and all explanations that he has never received any 'prize' do not totally prevent him from continuing this irrational belief/behavior. Also due to his medical condition, whenever he is confronted with the reality of the situation, he takes offense and becomes agitated and defensive to the point that he becomes angry and accusatory that we that are not trying to help him.
Attempts to stop and/or investigate and prosecute these scams through local law enforcement agencies as well as the postal authorities have proven ineffective.
