I, as an exhibitor of upcoming conference, was contacted via phone (they knew the company and my name) and told that there was a drop of hotel prices reserved for the conference and suggested to reserve a new room. In conversation I was told that I am free to cancel/change 72 hours prior the check-in date. Reserving a hotel was quite evolved which involved me signing (was I so tired to proceed?) the agreement via online hellosign service. There were no mentioning of any kind "service charges" in our phone conversation.
Upon completion got a confirmation email later on with the details on what I have signed for... only almost 3 days after, after my credit card declined 2nd transaction from the "EHM EXHIBITORS HOUSING MA" I got alarmed: sum of both charges already exceeded total hotel reservation I have "signed up for". I have tried to reach them back: Jeff was told to be N/A and I was forwarded to another person who didn't pick up and didn't call back (I have left a voice mail with the request to call back to clarify the details). Only then I googled up that it is apparently a common scam scheme -- even if they do provide hotel reservation services, taxes, fees etc are not disclosed and everything is charged upfront. Seems to be similar to other complaints out there suchas http://www.scambook.com/company/view/129876/EHS-Exhibitors-Housing-Services and many conferences already warn their participants about them -- because they reach out to you with correct contact information and reason (conference name) they are deceiving to believe they ARE the official conference housing service, which they are not. BEWARE!
