A very charming young lady came to our door asking for career information. After she obtained the scant career information she launched into a sales pitch about magazines, how she was earning points toward a trip to Ireland, and how they supported the women's shelter in Phoenix. Feeling empathetic, I ordered a two year subscription to a magazine for $55 and wrote her a check. She put a sticker on my door so nobody else would bother me. After she left I acted upon the uneasy feeling I had about her story and did an internet check of MTS Circulation, finding these complaints about their scam. At that point I decided to not only call the local police and report this, I contacted my bank to see what I needed to do to stop payment on my check. After finding out I was adding insult to injury by paying an outrageous cancellation fee, I decided to drive around my neighborhood in an attempt to find her. Fortunately I found her trying to scam another neighbor and told her I thought I had given her a check written on a closed account. She pulled out her packet of money and checks, and handed my check to me. That's when I tore it up in front of her and her potential victim and told her I didn't appreciate being scammed. Thanks to this website I saved my $55 and I called all my friends to alert them to this scam.
