Two young men came to our door around 7:30pm. They claimed that they were high school students participating in a competition to sell in order to gain points and speaking skills. If they received enough points and won the competition, they would recieve a full-expense-paid trip to Europe. They had pamphlets and catalogs to preview books that could be ordered, which would be donated to "the children's hospital" (clever because you would never expect to see anything in the future from it, but very sick because they were using sick children as false guilt trip to scam money). They stated that the "donation" would be tax deductible, which it is not since it was through a third party anyway. They even offered to send us a postcard from our choice of city when they were travelling around Europe.
I don't honestly know what pushed me to give in and believe their sad but hopeful story; I regrettably gave them $55 CASH... I mailed in the cancellation form on the back of the receipt by the third day of the cancellation period. I figured I would never see anything from it, but it didn't hurt to try (I'd rather not wonder forever what may have happened if I hadn't tried).
I hope someone finds a way to bring this scum-of-the-earth group down!
