In July 2011 I recieved a gift certificate to the Apple store for a new Iphone. When I went in to redeem it, they told me (per AT&T) I would have to wait until November, 2011 until i could get the phone at a discounted price (which is the amount my gift cerificate was for). So I waited until Novemeber and went back in. Upon return they told me I would have to wait until Feb. 2012. I complained that they had originally told me November 2011, but they convinced me I must have been mistaken and instructed to come back in Feb. So here we are almost to Feb and I tried to call and arrange an appointment to get my new phone. Now I'm told I am not eligible until June 2012. Well this time I found in writing where they told me I was originally eligible in Novemeber. It wasnt until I showed them the written promise that I got an explanation that, due to late payments, my eligibility had been pushed back more and more. When I first joined AT&T I put down a $300 deposit and was told upon 12 consecutive, on time payments, i would recieve it back. Sadly, I work 40 hours a week and still cannot afford to pay my phone bill on time every month. I pay it when I have enough money left over from a paycheck, usually the week after it is due, but ALWAYS pay it none of the less, INCLUDING an additional $40 charge for late fees. So not only did I put down $300 for occasions such as late payments, I have payed HUNDREDS of dollars in reconnection fees. No one EVER explained to me a late payment would affect the eligibility of a new phone. Why should it? I have paid MORE than enough money in the case I ever decide to skip a bill? You mean to tell me that in this economy AT&T not only collects their late fees but prevents customers the ability to upgrade to a new phone?!?! Even when their phone is broken, such as in my case (which i tried explaining to them). So now, there is a $220 gift certificate which I cant use because they wont let me upgrade my phone, even though i have been a customer for 2 years, always paying my bills, sometimes late yes, but paid. My phone is broken and doesnt work, i have to pay the bill, but no new phone allowed. Complete scam and rip off.
