To get some free samples, I stupidly checked a box on a survey and American Magazine Group (no website or bona fides on line) phoned offering $500 Walmart giftcard if I would choose three magazines, get one free for, $39.90 a month for THIRTY months.
I phoned my bank who gave me several 800 numbers (888 299-7272 - "George" at Coastal Readers in Ft Myers FL who never heard of American Magazine Group; (800 511-9287) George de la Russo (the telescammer allegedly) at 800 992-4179. This scam has been written about online. I am endeavoring to cancel today. Legally, says my bank, I have 30 days to do so no matter what the magazine group says. Get the cancellation from them in writing, get a cancellation number and write it down. If any charges then appear on your credit card statement, call your bank and they will deal with it. Caveat emptor, you don't get something for nothin'

  • I wish i would have found this before i gave those guys my bank number. i've never had this happen to me and I usually believe the best in people. EVERYTHING you mentioned here was the exact same thing they told me. i was even looking at it while they were telling me to LIE ABOUT MY INCOME so i could get there gift card offer. they gave me the exact same number as you listed: 1-800-992-4179. and the guy, a man named evan hung up on me when he realized that i was "illegiable" for the offer. and the other guy, a man named Jonathan, get saying that i should still go along with it. he was the one who told me to lie about my income. they said they'd give me my money back within 40 hours, so legally, my bank is required to wait 15 days before they take further action. I'm sorry this happened to you. just be thankful that this was a 40$ and in my case 30$ mistake and not a 300$ or worse. we must get the word out there about these guys. I wanted to call back and tell them not to get too comfortable with my money. but it was truly emotional distressing for me because again, this never happened to me before, i had to shut down my bank card number and get a new debit card, file a complaint, all the while feeling like an idiot. on the bright side, at least we know better. hopefully one day the cops will have these guys busted for con.
