This guy with an Indian or Pakistani accent phoned me and said that my computer had filed an error report with Windows and that his job was to call me and help me fix the problem. He was a little hard to understand but he implied that he was calling from Microsoft.

He asked me several questions about what operating system I used, etc.

He said that it appeared that my computer had been infected with viruses and that he would guide me thru the process of deleting them.

He then had me go thru several screens in the control panel, system tools and so forth. He had me look up some obscure term on Google.

He was making the situation sound critical. Then he told me to type in www.windowssolutionworld.com which brought up this annual membership plan that would scan and fix my computer for an annual membership fee. He said this was the only way he could help me save my computer.

I have not been having any problems with my computer and I am careful to scan it frequently and so forth. So I realized this guy was just a salesman for the company doing a song and dance trying to scare me into buying an annual subscription to their service.

This company also calls itself Windowscare, and I can’t find any information on either name in the search engines except for links back to the company’s sales site.

  • I just received a simliar call. He said he worked for Microsoft. This guy (thick accent) said I had a high level of virus activity on my computer. I said which computer of mine. He said it was my PC. It was running outdated software. I said which PC. I am running XP, Vista, Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003. All of these are considered "outdated" by Microsoft. This guy was vague. Eventually he led me to the event viewer on my XP box and claimed that all of the errors and warnings are viruses. I told him no they are not because I understand what I am viewing. We go back and forth and he tried to get me to go to his website windowssolutionworld.com which I would not do until after I Googled it. That is how I discovered this site. Going to unknown websites and clicking on them is how viruses can get installed. I hung up on him.

This is a telemarketing fear monger, preying on the less technical users.

  • Same thing just happened to me. The guy said he had rec'd a message from Microsoft that computer was infected with a virus (sounded like he referred to it as a hunta virus LOL). Anyway, he instructed to check my windows log error file and then acted astonished when I mentioned the number of errors there. He then said that I was "really badly infected" and that he needed to take this to the next level. He directed me to the "windows solution world" site and that's when I hung up. He called back once (number shows up as 0-0000-00000). I didn't answer. The site seems harmless, just don't click on anything.

  • I am a computer techie. I am a mainframe expert (30+ years) and a Windows power user. If you are running anti-virus and spyware software you are 99% protected. This company claimed ALL errors and warnings were viruses without having read the text of the messages. Some of these are related to products I do not have installed such as an Office 2000 feature I choose not to install. These guys are FEAR MONGERS preying on the technical innocent.
