This site claims to be for promoting ebooks and claims to have a huge audience. Also claims it attracts average downloads in the thousands. However, authors are reporting that the site has led to no increase in sales or even page hits and that the figures quoted are fraudulent.

I paid for a $95 yesterday but have since requested a refund via Paypal.

  • Derek, first off we don't claim to promote ebooks. We do promote ebooks. Second we don't claim to have a large audience we do have a large audience.

Third, your $95 was refunded the moment you requested it. It would be fraudulent for us to hold it and we did not. So please note we have not with held any funds from your advertising charge.

Forth, no where on our site do we guarantee specific results. We provide estimations based on past history. Like any advertising whether it be advertising through facebook ads, adwords ads, yahoo search marketing, paying for blog advertising or running an ad in a newspaper/magazine. There is no guarantees given by companies as to the results you would get. If advertising was that easy, ALL advertising would work. But ask anyone who has advertised in the paper with a large circulation, magazine with a large circulation, facebook with a MASSIVE circulation or adwords. They will tell you that NOT all advertising has produced the expected results you desire.Do you think FB, Adwords or a magazine is going to refund you? because you never got results? No they aren't! BUT WE DID! Now place on top of that the book industry where you have self-published authors and big name authors standing shoulder to shoulder running deals. Anyone with a lick of sense knows it's competitive. In our daily email alerts a book in one genre going on sell for 99 cents, may be beside 2 books that are offering for free in the same genre. And bear in mind while our readers download EVERY DAY, EACH person won't download or pay for a book every day. They pick and choose just like ANY READER picks and chooses what they are interested in. We stand behind our service. There are many factors that determine action. Book Covers, Book blurbs, Individual marketing and past history of books written. We are honest, hard working folk spreading the word for authors and helping reads save money. We welcome you to try our service again in the future.

  • AT least four other indie writers complained abut your site yesterday and received refunds. You had little choice because the claims you make cannot be substantiated. A couple of the writers used embedded code to monitor traffic from your site to their book page. It was so low as to not register. Sales also showed no improvement from using your site, which is hard to believe if your audience is really as large as you claim (and is not just comprised of bots). These are successful authors with tried and tested books, so the argument about reader preferences doesn't stand up.

The bottom line is that you are charging for something you cannot deliver. Also, it has been noted that your Face Book page displays books recently promoted (successfully) on Book Bub, creating the impression that the success stems from your site.

It's not helping your case seeking to justify your site here or via email (all the affected writers have received a variation on the same email I was sent).

If you sincerely believe you have done nothing unethical, and if you really have all those thousands of active subscribers (Jillian didn't seem to think many of them were active in her email to me) then why not try some PR and offer to those disappointed writers who withdrew their ads based on the experience of their peers, a free ad with your service? If it goes well, those same writers will spread the word. If it goes badly, at least we'll know the truth and you can go quietly out of business.

  • Derek they only give 2000 characters to respond so i will have to break this up into several messages.

So to begin. It is not about justifying anything. It is about responding professionally to a few that are making accusations which are incorrect. I will answer some of your questions here along with provide some of the answers we have already given to you via email.

I'm not sure where you are getting this information from but you are misinformed. One author advertised with us and because she felt that her advertising costs weren't spent well, she requested a refund. Unlike 99% of companies online or offline who offer advertising, we obliged and gave her a refund. Most companies wouldn't. As first and foremost scheduling, setting up and advertising is a service in itself and that cost must be covered. Regardless, we refunded her.

From there a couple of people who she must have known who were scheduled to advertise through us in the coming weeks ( but never advertised through us so they would not be able to monitor their book page as they never ran an ad) requested a refund because they felt her complaint might have merit and they were concerned. As they had not advertised through us we obliged and gave them a refund.

Also regarding monitoring book pages. This information is completely misinformed too. Her book was listed on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Kobo not her personal website. Those sites are strictly run by those companies and they do not allow tracking on their site ( they only track number of sales ). To correctly track any advertising campaign to determine where traffic is originating from. It usually requires one of two things. ( 1 is the company you are advertising through either provides a back end tracking system ( blog banner advertising is an example ) or the final landing page needs to have an embed that can tell you where the user came from that produced the sale. Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Kobo does not allow you to do that. So her claims that she was able to track effectively is incorrect. Ideally she would need a url from us and her own tracking system in place.) Author central only lets you track number of sales not impressions and even that is the bare bones.

Next, we are not charging for something we cannot deliver as we have made it very clear on our site that advertising through us is not a guarantee of specific results. We are providing a service. No company in the world, whether it be advertising through newspapers, magazines, face book ads or google ads offers guaranteed results. And no company in the world is going to refund you if you didn't make back your advertising costs. However we did refund in this case which demonstrates that we are not only honest but we regard our authors highly. Advertising is part and parcel of attempting to get branding and exposure for products and services. So while, yes businesses are attempting to get more exposure, leads and sales when they advertise anywhere ( Facebook, google, magazines, newspapers on blogs) unfortunately the end result may not always be what someone imagined or expected. That is why you OFTEN here of small and large companies blowing through large amounts of money in advertising. Ask any business online ( not just those who sell books ) and you will discover that advertising mediums such as radio, tv or online is only effective to the degree that your offer, product and social proof is effective.

You could run a 2 day campaign on Facebook where there are thousands of people seeing your ad and still have little to no sales, and yet the guy below you could be raking it in. Then you could come back a few months later and run the same ad and do extremely well. As mentioned before there are MORE factors and variables that come into play in advertising to determine why users click on an ad, phone an ad or buy outright a product. Some of which lay heavily on the Product, Copy, Trust and Pricing along with Other products from other people play a large factor in peoples decisions to take action. That is why google adwords rewards those who advertise through them with lower cost per impression or clicks based on how their ad performs. They recognize that a product alone does not warrant a click or a sale. Copy, Design, offer, trust, social proof and pricing play a large factor in a business product or service getting results. Along with those who are advertising right beside your ad.

Now that is even more evident in the book marketplace where tons of FREE books from known or popular authors make it challenging for independent authors to gain trust, attention and a readership.

We are trying to change that mindset by working with independent authors. However expectations from an independent author may not always be realistic, taking into fact the large number of excellent ( high review ) books available to readers competing alongside them in the marketplace.

Never mind the large number of sites that are like ours who are also delivering free and bargain books to readers. Just because an author has a book, they think it's good, they've had good reviews. It doesn't mean it will get clicked on or bought every time they advertise it. Forums are littered with authors who have had success once in one place and then tried again and not had success.

There are many factors as to why one BOOK gets lots of free downloads or sales and another only a few. ( Book covers, Blurbs, Reviews, Existing Readership, Previous Book Success plays a major role )

Any author would be insane to think that doesn't factor into it.

Couple that with the fact that while our subscribers who are active click through on books listed DAILY, not all our readers(subscribers) will take action on EVERY BOOK shown, every day.

Because we send daily emails this means they get a MASSIVE choice to select from. At the end of a given week they may have well over 70 books in their ereader.

And while we turn away close to 50% of authors who submit to AVOID taking on authors who have bad covers, poor blurbs, few reviews or bad reviews which is only going to work against them. ( Yes, we don't do turn them away to be mean.)

What we cannot control are WHAT BOOKS our readers both via email, facebook and twitter will decide to click on.

BUT we can control our marketing and which subscribers have not been active for the past few months and remove them.

To increase the odds in the favor of our authors and to maintain a high standard of email subscribers.

Regarding postings on Facebook books that have been featured on book bub. Please note that our site, book bub and many of the other free and paid book listing sites that can be readily found via google. Display deals by the same authors around the same time. Authors don't just pick one site to work with only. Also please note that some books that are included in book bub, our site and many of the other sites are not there because the author paid. While our inclusions in our emails, Facebook and twitter are made up of paid authors. There are those who have been included for FREE without the author requesting. Simply because they are offering an amazing deal, have high reviews and would be a good match for our readers. You can tell on book bub and other sites which books those are as they usually don't have a known deadline of when the deal ends. It's stated as deal unknown. That's why you will see a mixture from authors who have paid and authors who's books were selected and included without payment because they are hot right now.

And finally yes we more than likely will offer a open invitation promotion in the near future for authors who don't want to take the plunge and pay but can get a free listing. Those will be selected based on the quality of their books and past history. And as previously said, we already do that with a number of books as like so does bookbub and other paid sites. The only differences is that it has not been advertised as an open call to authors. And is left for the editorial team to determine which books in a current day are hot and match readers interests.

I hope this answers your questions. We stand behind our readers and authors 100%.

  • I wrote a long response but it got lost! In short: Amazon pages views were tracked. There is a well known technique for doing this (which will no doubt soon be closed down). I find your responses disingenuous and don't think there's much point continuing dialogue unless you are willing to come clean (about why your Face Book pages lost something like 700 likes yesterday, why a bestselling offer reports no improved sales or views from her ad with you, why hardly anyone on KBoards has heard of you, yet you claim to have such a big following).

You do not enjoy the trust authors have in ENT and other sites that can demonstrate success for authors. These figures are almost always reported by the authors on the forums, and so reputation is spread by word of mouth (not the site claiming so many thousand average downloads/sales).

I really hope you do get this site to be a success -- it would benefit us all, but at the moment the impression is that you promise much and deliver little or nothing.

If you accept my suggestion for a free trial for these authors who've lost confidence in your service, you have everything to gain (if you really have the reach you claim). These are very vocal and well-connected writers, all of whom have been bestsellers at some point.

I've said all I'm going to on the matter. You know the truth of your claims. I guess the task now is to convince authors with results rather than claims on your site.

I do hope you are successful in this venture.
