I Googled Toshiba help desk, looking for help with my laptop's webcam, and dialed the # that came up in my search. I thought I was speaking to someone from Toshiba and I let the representative have remote control of my computer. He showed me numerous sketchy files, viruses, evidence of foreign entities gaining access to my computer and using my ISP, etc. After scaring the bejesus out of me, he offered me three different, expensive plans to totally remove all harmful entities remotely in less than 24 hours. I agreed to the cheapest, 1-year option, then he put me on hold to speak to his manager and came back with a discount offer for a 2-year plan. I began to get suspicious, since this is how car salesmen operate, but I agreed to this deal. Then he opened a web page for Sach Solutions and told me to enter my credit card info. Now I was really nervous and asked, "Isn't this Toshiba? What's Sach Solutions? I'm not comfortable." He said they were contracted by Toshiba and being a real hard sell, trying to reassure me that everything was "totally fine and safe." I disconnected his remote access to my computer and told him I'd call back after looking into his company further if I was still interested. Since I saw several complaints on this site and others, I decided to take my laptop to Geek Squad and see if I even had any problems -- or if maybe he'd GIVEN me viruses. The Geek Squad technician assured me that my computer was just fine (except for the broken webcam) and that this is unfortunately a common scam to get access to people's credit card info. These guys know exactly how to make it look like you've got serious problems. The Geek Squad technician's advice, which I will now take ALWAYS, is to go directly to your computer company's website to find the help desk #; don't just Google it.
