Here is my experience with Hotwire on November 30, 2013, and it had nothing to do with star ratings:

Booked a room on Hotwire.com and paid in full. Got to the hotel, and hotel staff did not let me into the building (it was cold weather) for at least 10 minutes. Once inside, hotel staff said that my reservation did not exist and that there was no reservation for me from Hotwire. Minutes later, staff backtracked, and stated that there was a reservation for me, but they did not have any rooms available. Then staff backtracked again and said that they did not have any CLEAN rooms available. Staff then escorted me to their hallways, opened a few room doors to in their own words "show me just how dirty their rooms were". Staff then informed me that "their cleaning staff was lazy and the rooms would not be cleaned until the next day, and therefore they could not let me stay there. I immediately contacted Hotwire, but was not offered any alternative form of accommodation. I requested a refund via PayPal. Hotwire has informed me that they will not refund my money, and stands by this 5 days later. I am very distressed about this whole situation (which has not helped me, considering I have a GI disorder). I am considering suing Hotwire if this mistreatment is not resolved.

This is false advertising. The hotel stated that Hotwire knew they had no rooms available, and yet Hotwire still booked me. I want my money back.
