On February 10, 2014 I had a scheduled appointment to have a technician come to my home for a simple air duct cleaning. I was having this done as a precaution as I have little children in the home and we recently had some reconstruction done to our home. Once Sebastian arrived, he immediately went to look at the airconditioning unit. His statement to me was that if there is anything wrong with the A/C then they dont want to drag these things through the duct system. He then comes to me showing me pictures of the inside of our A/C unit and claiming that it is covered in black mold. His argument to me was that this is definately black mold and that black mold is lethal. We must have a multiple things done such as, a cleaning of our A/C unit at $450.00, then a sanitizing of our air ducts which is normally $350.00 but per his manager if I did it that day he would only charge me $275.00. None of what he was telling me seemed right since I had recently had our trusted A/C repair person out for a cleaning. He then proceeded to tell me that my freon was 4 lbs. low and I needed to get that recharged immediately at $79.00 per lbs. This is when I told the technician that we were planning on getting a new unit this summer regardless so I would pass on all that he was suggesting. Once he left, I began my research. First, I read the EPA website with regard to sanitizing the ducts. Per the EPA there are only very specific reason to clean your ducts and sanitizing is not proven to be necessary or effective. Next, the EPA website states specifically that mold can only be determined by a specialist once it has been confirmed in a labatory. Next, I contacted a Mold Specialist to find out what they thought about what Air Care Solutions stated. The specialist confirmed that mold could only be determined in a lab, however, he did not suggest us spending the money because from his experience it looked like our A/C unit was just dusty. I then had two additional A/C companies confirm the same thing. I then had our A/C repair person come to the home to check the freon levels. He showed my husband that according to his meter, we were barely 2 lbs. low on freon. I am greatful that I did not fall prey to these sales tactics but I am concerned for the many people that do. When a technician tries to put fear into the customer in an effort to have them spend money, that is dishonest and this should be made known.
