They forwarded a form for advertising in a Fair Guide with references to ASHA (American Speech and Hearing Association) and one of our associates who is not an employee of the company innocently filled out the form and sent it in.
ASHA is not associated with this, it looks like the company got an exhibitor guide from one of their meetings and is sending out solicitations from it.
I caught it before it was paid but not before their very short cancellation period. I wrote them to cancel and they claim it is a three year contract.
Construct Data is in Bratislava Slovakia. If you go on the internet, there is a lot of info on this scam.

  • I too filled out the "free update" and then received multiple accounts/demands overdue (in large black capitalized bold letters). There is a ruling by the Austrian court that C. D. are deliberately misleading. Personally I will NOT pay. I do not owe anyone a cent and am always immediate in response to billing and have an A class credit rating, BUT not with this. Who pays for an advertisement they have not seen on a site unfamiliar? I understood this request was a simple inclusion to a global register. Unless someone knows something diffferent I can't imagine how successful they will be making everyone appear (there seems to be thousands) in a courthouse in Bratislava -- course they could give us all RT air tickets and a vacation.
Anyone know what jurisdiction Bratislava has in the USA? I believe none, so I am not answering them anymore and any billing they send just refusing unopened. I have sent the so-said required certified letter and multiple e-mails to Construct Data written in the format suggested on the Austrian help site. Maybe a counter suit for stress might be in order (LOL).

    Cheers.

  • Further to my statement above. Today I have filed complaint with the USA FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection, written to their Swiss equivalent, advised the USA consulate in Bratislava about what is happening and my local BBB, who, after checking advise me to write 'refused' on every piece of mail they send and if it sets your mind at rest they also confirm this company has no jurisdiction in the USA.

Hope this sets your mind at rest, my sister is hearing impaired, so have empathy for you.

  • My company had a similar circumstance. The show was the 2011 Special Libraries Convention. Somehow they slipped in what appeared to be a free advertisement in the show's catalog, with the small print at the bottom of the form initiating a three year subscription to their scam. They have sent continuous dunning notices, which I have replied to, stating in the last one that they would receive no more communication from me, and to go away. If they persist I'll send complaints to the above mentioned US government agencies.
