On October 10, 2013 I was on the customer service line of AT&T. After being transferred around a bunch of times (typical of AT&T) I was, unbeknownst to me, transferred to Liz Web Solutions. I thought that they were part of or affiliated with AT&T since I was transferred directly from AT&T to Liz Web Solutions.
Because I was having computer issues, I allowed them remote access to my laptop. They proceeded to show me a long list of files that, according to them, represented evidence of attempts to hack into my computer. They then tried to sell me some kind of license which they said had expired, insisting that I had to renew it. The cost ranged from 200 to 600 dollars depending on the length of the ‘license’. Throughout this call there were a few red flags. First of all they were yelling the information at me in a very excited manner, trying to make me feel it was an emergency and I’d better do what they say. Also, the names they used were from the movies like ‘Jack Dawson’ from The Titanic. But the biggest red flag was when they wanted a credit card from me. I am an AT&T customer and AT&T has my billing information so why did these people need a credit card? I questioned this and they continued to yell at me that my computer was going to crash; that it would never work again, etc., etc. At this point I told them I had no intention of giving them my credit card. More yelling ensued until finally I hung up on them.
They actually called me back several times throughout the afternoon, always yelling incomprehensible things about my computer and what they were doing. I kept hanging up. Since that day, I have received several phone calls from these people. Something strange is that their calls are identified on Caller ID either as people who are in my contact list or as a 4 digit number. They say the purpose of the call is to credit my account for the $200 service which I refused – and they want the credit card number to do so. Now I’ve watched my credit card account and there are no charges from Liz Web Solutions nor anything out of the ordinary. The unnerving thing is, now they can tell me which credit card I use to pay AT&T and they know the last 4 digits of that card. I don’t know how they got that unless they somehow stole it from AT&T.
I have been in contact with AT&T and have gotten little to no result from them so far. I do feel they bear some responsibility for solving this situation because it was through them that I was connected to these Liz Web Solutions clowns.
Just goes to show you to be careful about giving out financial information! I think I need to cancel that credit card as a precaution to those clowns getting their hands on the rest of the number!
