I will attend a conference in Oxford next September, were I will give a talk. Last week I received a phone call from EHS-housing, saying that they were in charge of hotel reservations for the conference. They proposed me a room in a hotel where "most participants of the conference already had a reservation", located "7 minutes walk from the conference". I accepted their offer, and they immediately charged me the entire cost of my stay.

A few days later I learned that in fact this company had nothing to do with the conference organizers, that the hotel was located very far from the conference (40' by bus!!), and that none of the other speakers of the conference would be in that hotel. (I wondered how they could have known that I would attend this conference, but in fact the program of the conference is on the web...).

When I contacted EHS-housing to cancel my reservation and get reimbursed, they replied: "in case you wish to cancel this reservation the amount that you paid as a deposit will be applied as a penalty for cancellation"
